CASE STUDIES

Martha Stewart OmniMedia is a multi-faceted publishing and product company built around the personal brand of lifestyle expert Martha Stewart. For years, its magazines and television programs have powered a 500-person business into one of the biggest brands in the home, cooking and lifestyle space.

Typical of traditional publishers, however, MSLO has lost ground to digital upstarts and seen the power of its TV and print offerings decline.

As the company pivoted more to digital products, a burning question arose: How to create a robust digital video presence, along with the staffing, technical and monetization structures to support that?

I worked with their senior leaders, sales teams and front-line producers to create the organizational structure for fast and efficient digital video production, advised on hiring and equipment, and created a sales pricing system for digital video.

“Tim has a clear view of the rapidly changing digital video landscape, with expertise that ranges from production to technology to monetization.  He worked closely with our team to develop and help execute a plan to transition from a traditional TV production model to efficiently producing and monetizing online video.  He was easy to work with and cared about our business.”

Mid-Career Repositioning

Nick is a successful digital media executive at a major traditional news broadcaster. It’s the latest of several such jobs he’s had in the field, but each job seems less satisfying than the last. It’s not that there aren’t interesting challenges or room for trying new things. It’s just that it’s beginning to feel the same after 20+ years in the business.

Nick’s initial question: What else is out there that I could do for a job in digital media?

Step one is reframing the question. Rather than look for the next job, the next rung on the ladder of digital media, take a step back and look at what you really want: What are you truly passionate about, what is your unique genius?

Nick’s answer had nothing to do with digital media or news. His zone of genius is historical documentary films. Knowing that, there are hundreds of ways he can get into that field and bring his best game for it.

Career counseling is old school. Genius counseling is the wave of the future.

“Tim is the kind of sage for whom, in another age, people would climb mountains for an audience. I’ve got almost two decades of experience in the media business, but Tim helped me look at my career and future in exciting new ways. Like the best professors, he asks questions and sees connections that help clarify and illuminate any situation.”
